    Distal Pancreatectomy

    Distal Pancreatectomy

The pancreas is a small organ that is located under the stomach in the depths of the abdomen behind the duodenum. It releases important biological substances for human life: hormones insulin, glucagon, which regulate blood sugar, enzymes. Unfortunately, pancreatic cancer is often diagnosed late, as it has unclear and quite humane symptoms: pain, itchy skin and weight loss.

Since the disease is detected in the later stages, it is considered very dangerous. Pancreatic cancer is the main indication for pancreatic surgery and partial organ resection. Also, the reason for the operation is the detection of a precancerous condition. In the case of chronic inflammation and cysts, medication is used.

    Surgery

There are two techniques for the operation:

    • Whipple’s operation. It is produced when the tumour is located on the head of the gland (approximately 80% of all cases). Resection of the tail. It is produced when the tumour is on the tail.
    • The operation allows you to save the head, many parts of the tissues of the body, which reduces functional damage.

In Israel, Whipple’s operation involves several stages. The first involves diagnostic laparoscopy. Its purpose is to find out the state of the organ and determine whether the planned resection can be performed. If the tumour is inoperable, at this stage the operation ends. If the surgeon decides that it is worth continuing the operation, they proceed to the second stage – resection of the organ head. What was resected during the operation is subjected to histological analysis in the laboratory. This allows you to determine the optimal treatment based on the patient’s health status. The completion of pancreatic surgery is the connection of the pancreas body, stomach, remaining bile ducts to the jejunum, which is located between the duodenum and ileum. Thus, the doctor almost re-builds the patient’s digestive system.

Resection of the head and tail is a rather dangerous operation. According to studies, treatment at Tel Aviv Medical Clinic, where experienced doctors work, reduces risks. To minimize the likelihood of complications, it is worth informing the surgeon, anesthesiologist of all the historical data. This will allow you to choose the optimal treatment that is fully consistent with the patient’s condition.
