    Pediatric lymphomas: overview

    Pediatric lymphomas: overview

    Lymphomas are tumors that arise in the lymphatic system – nodes the size of olives that produce lymph, the fluid that carries disease-fighting white blood cells (lymphocytes) throughout the body. Lymphoma affects two types of lymphocytes: T cells and B cells, and B cell lymphomas are much more common. Childhood lymphomas are also categorized according to how quickly they spread. Low-grade (indolent) lymphomas develop very slowly but tend to be more common in the body. High-grade to moderate-grade lymphomas spread faster but usually respond well to intensive treatment. The latter is more common in children.

    Types of diseases

    Specialists distinguish the following types of lymphomas:

    • Hodgkin’s lymphoma occurs mainly in adolescents and young people aged 15-35 years.
    • Lymphoblastic lymphoma mainly affects T lymphocytes and has a similar course to acute lymphoblastic leukemia.
    • Burkit’s lymphoma is an aggressive, rapidly spreading tumor that damages B-lymphocytes.
    • There are two subtypes of large cell lymphomas: diffuse large cell lymphoma, which is more common in preschool years and adolescents, and anaplastic large cell lymphoma, which is more common in adolescents.

    It must be remembered that the earlier a pathology is detected, the easier it is to get rid of it. Therefore, it is necessary to be attentive to your health and to consult a specialist in time if suspicious symptoms appear.

    Diagnosis of the disease

    To make the correct diagnosis, the doctor will conduct a comprehensive examination of the body and select an individual therapy program. The following types of research are often used:

    • Examination and collection of an anamnesis of the disease;
    • Ultrasound;
    • MRI;
    • Biopsy;
    • Scintigraphy;
    • Analysis of blood and urine;
    • PET and others.
