Endocrinology in Israel
Endocrinology is a branch of medicine that deals with study, diagnostics and treatment of endocrine system diseases. It includes ductless glands that secrete various hormones. Along with nervous system, endocrine system is considered as “conductor” of our body; hormones regulate all processes in the body without exception. And if there is a malfunction in one or another gland functioning, the whole body suffers.
Endocrinology in Israel is well developed, here doctors actively use innovative non-drug treatment methods that not only help to control symptoms of the disease, but also affect the very cause of the disease.
Endocrinology is closely intertwined with other branches of medicine, for example, with immunology, gynecology, reproduction, oncology, neurology, and andrology. Therefore, specialists from Endocrinology Department of Tel Aviv Medical Clinic work closely with doctors of other related specializations – gynecologists, reproductive specialists, urologists andrologists, oncologists, neurologists.
That’s why people turn to endocrinologist with such common medical problems as diabetes, thyroid pathology, problems with pregnancy, menstrual irregularities in women, etc. Our department employs only the best world-famous specialists who have excellent theoretical training and one of the best practical bases in the world.
Departments
The TAMS Endocrinology Department operates several separate clinics that specialize in diagnosis and treatment of a specific problem:
- General endocrinology – specialists in this area, as a rule, are the first to contact patients with endocrinological complaints, conduct an examination, take an anamnesis, perform a primary diagnosis, make up a plan for further examination and then prescribe a treatment program.
- Diabetology – endocrinologists of this profile deal with problems related to the diagnosis and treatment of sugar type (all of its types).
- Thyroidology is a branch of endocrinology that deals with study, diagnosis and treatment of thyroid gland diseases.
- Endocrine oncology – doctors in this field treat patients with benign and malignant neoplasms of endocrine glands (thyroid cancer, parathyroid adenomas, pituitary and adrenal incidentalomas, etc.).
- Pediatric endocrinology – deals with endocrine diseases of childhood.
- Gynecological endocrinology – doctors of this profile deal with issues of menstrual irregularities and infertility in women.
- Neuroendocrinology is a field that studies neuroendocrine diseases (malformations of pituitary gland, brain, adrenal glands).
Obesity Treatment Clinic – specialists in this profile are engaged in traditional and drug treatment of obesity, as well as monitoring patients after bariatric surgery.
What diseases does Endocrinology Department treat?
Diagnostic methods in endocrinology
If there is a suspicion of an endocrine disease, patient is referred for in-depth diagnostics. In our department, only the best specialists practice, who have trained more than once in the best clinics in USA and Europe. The main rule of Tel Aviv Medical Clinic Diagnostic Department is to get the most accurate results in the shortest period of time.
Making up an examination plan, preliminary diagnosis, patient’s age, gender, concomitant diseases presence, indications and contraindications for certain types of diagnostics are taken into account. The whole process takes place as quickly and comfortably as possible for patient. Diagnostics are carried out only on modern and safe expert-class equipment. If it is necessary to perform invasive diagnostics (for example, trephine biopsy, colonoscopy with biopsy, etc.), procedure is performed under local or general anesthesia so that patient does not feel pain or other discomfort.
The entire diagnostic process takes from 3 to 5 business days. On the first day, patient is consulted by an endocrinologist who conducts an initial examination, collects complaints and medical history, studies all the medical documents that patient brought with him, the results of previous examinations and treatment (if they were). Next, the specialist makes up a further examination plan, which includes various diagnostic tests, depending on expected diagnosis.
The entire diagnostics lasts 2-3 days. Patient may be prescribed various blood and urine tests, including those to determine hormones, and special provocative tests. Diagnostics must be supplemented with modern medical imaging methods – digital radiography, ultrasound, CT, MRI, PET-CT, MSCT, scintigraphy, densitometry, etc.
Upon completion of diagnostic stage, a second consultation with an endocrinologist is scheduled. Now the specialist acquaints patient with his final and updated diagnosis, answers questions and offers an individual comprehensive treatment program, and, if necessary, rehabilitation.
Modern treatment methods in endocrinology
The main advantages of endocrinological diseases treatment at Tel Aviv Medical Clinic:
- Active use of modern technologies that not only eliminate symptoms, but also significantly improve the quality of patient’s life, for example, insulin pumps, devices for 24-hour blood glucose monitoring, artificial pancreas.
- Widespread application, along with classical drug treatment, of modern non-drug methods of therapy, for example, bariatric surgery for overweight and diabetes, which can significantly reduce weight and normalize blood glucose levels even without special glucose-lowering medications.
In Israel, the most modern medicines are very quickly introduced into practice, which receive approval from relevant authorities for widespread application, for example, modern insulin medecines and other medicines for treatment of diabetes, biological drugs for treatment of osteoporosis. This allows TAMC endocrinologists to help their patients more effectively.
Important!
Studies have shown that this innovative device provides better blood sugar control and reduces risk of diabetes complications developing.
This device turned out to be especially convenient for children who do not need to measure their sugar 5 times a day and inject insulin on their own.
Gliflozins (SGLT2 inhibitors)
This is a new class of drugs for type 2 diabetes treatment. They reduce blood glucose levels by blocking the process of its reabsorption (reverse suction) in kidneys. Taking them, patients almost never experience hypoglycemia; they are available in the form of tablets rather than injections, which is very convenient for patients.
In addition to lowering blood sugar, this new class of drugs (Jardins’ empagliflozin and Forxiga’s dapagliflozin) promotes weight loss, which is important for people with type 2 diabetes, and also protects heart and kidneys. Patients who take these medications reduce their risk of cardiovascular complications by 40%.
A new class of drugs for weight loss – glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) analogues
Over past few years, obese patients have been able to reduce their weight with the help of effective drugs from the group of glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) analogues. This class of drugs was originally developed for type 2 diabetes treatment, but in the end the drugs not only lowered blood sugar levels, but also significantly reduced weight, which allowed these drugs to be registered as medications for obesity treatment.
To date, 3 active ingredients of glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) analogues have been tested and approved for use:
- liraglutide (“Victoza”, “Saxenda”);
- Semaglutide (Ozempic, Rebelsas, Vegovi);
- tirzepatide (“Munjaro”).
Action mechanism of these drugs is similar to a substance that is produced in the human intestine – glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1), which is a regulator of appetite and food consumption. The substance accumulates in brain, where, due to specific activation of GLP-1R receptors, it increases the feeling of fullness and reduces hunger signals, which promotes weight loss.
Research is also actively underway on other members of glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) analogue group, and we will soon be able to expand our therapeutic options in obesity treatment.
Bariatric surgery for obese patients
Along with new drugs for type 2 diabetes treatment, specialists from Endocrinology Department of Tel Aviv Medical Clinic are actively resorting to bariatric surgery, because in 60-80% of such people, losing weight, they manage to normalize their sugar levels and stop all hypoglycemic drugs.
At TAMS barriatric surgeries are performed using minimally invasive methods without surgical skin incisions using endoscopic techniques. Next, patients undergo rehabilitation; the recovery process after such modern surgical interventions is short-lived. Then they are observed by endocrinologists to correct metabolic disorders and consolidate obtained results.
Thyroid cancer treatment
To diagnose malignant neoplasms of thyroid gland, TAMS uses modern method of fine-needle puncture biopsy under ultrasound guidance. Tissue samples are sent to the best pathohistological laboratories in Israel, where they are studied by highly qualified world-renowned pathologists. Thanks to such checks, we are absolutely sure of diagnosis and treatment program correctness.
Treatment of thyroid cancer is complex. The basis is a radical syrgery to remove thyroid gland. Our specialists use minimal surgical approaches so that there are no scars on the neck after treatment. During intervention, a modern procedure for neuromonitoring of nerve fibers is performed to avoid damaging them, as this may lead to loss of patient’s voice in future. In some particularly difficult situations, such surgeries can be performed in Robotic Surgery Department using the latest generation Da Vinci installation.
An alternative to surgery may be treatment with radioactive iodine. The isotope is introduced into human body, it accumulates in thyroid gland and destroys it along with cancer cells. The procedure is performed in a modern Radiology Department and requires patient’s hospitalization for several days.
If you or your relatives are diagnosed with an endocrine disease of any type, do not wait until the disease becomes chronic and causes severe complications. Contact Israeli specialists who work at TAMS for a consultation.
