    Neurology in Israel

    Neurology Department at Tel Aviv Medical Center studies, diagnoses and treats various diseases of central and peripheral nervous system. Here, patients with both common and rare neurological problems are guaranteed to receive all the necessary help.

    Department of Neurology at TAMC is a unique structure where only highly qualified doctors who have undergone special training and internship work. A whole multidisciplinary team functions coherently in the department. In addition to neurologists, our patients are assisted, if necessary, by anesthesiologists, neurosurgeons, oncologists, rehabilitation specialists, cardiologists, infectious disease specialists, psychologists, speech therapists, physical therapists and other specialists.

    The main goal of this approach is the opportunity to receive the entire range of necessary medical services within the walls of one institution, starting with diagnostics and ending, for example, with rehabilitation after an acute cerebrovascular accident.

    Patients with any congenital or acquired diseases of brain and spinal cord (central nervous system), as well as lesions of peripheral nervous structures (peripheral nervous system) can contact our neurological center.

    Diagnostic methods in neurology

    Neurology Department of Tel Aviv Medical Center has access to the best modern diagnostic equipment, so the entire process of examining the initial patient is quick, painless and efficient.

    Modern diagnostic procedures:

    • The entire range of modern laboratory diagnostics (general clinical, biochemical, hormonal, genetic and other blood tests, urine, cerebrospinal fluid, and other biological fluids if necessary).
    • Thorough neurological examination and topical diagnosis.
    • Spinal (lumbar) puncture followed by examination of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) or administration of contrast for medical neuroimaging.
    • Computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), multislice computed tomography (MSCT), positron emission tomography (PET-CT) with and without contrast, and their various modifications are the “eyes” of modern neurology. These are high-precision examinations that allow us to localize the pathological process, determine its nature and extent, plan the scope of upcoming surgery, if necessary, or other treatment procedures, reproduce a 3D or 4D model of pathological focus, etc.
    • Electroencephalography (EEG) is a method of functional diagnostics of brain electrical activity allows you to identify disorders such as epilepsy, some forms of sleep disorders, and various forms of encephalopathy.

    • Electromyography (EMG) is a method of functional study of neuromuscular connections state. Allows us to identify various peripheral diseases of nervous system, impaired transmission of nerve impulses to muscle fibers.
    • Echoencephalography is a method of brain examining using ultrasound. It is more common in young children, but is also used in adults to assess the condition of midline intracerebral structures.
    • Angiography of head and neck vessels – allows to identify vascular malformations, anomalies of vascular development, and aneurysms.
    • Ultrasound of head and neck arteries and veins.
    • Biopsy and histological examination of obtained cell samples. If during diagnostics there is a need for a biopsy, samples are sent to confirm the diagnosis to the best Israeli pathomorphological laboratories. Thanks to such “molecular tests”, we are confident in diagnosis correctness and the effectiveness of selected treatment regimen.

    Modern treatment methods in neurology

    As a rule, neurological disorders last for years (except for acute diseases), this has an extremely negative impact on general condition of a person, his social adaptation, mental health, emotional state and relationships with others and family. Therefore, you should start treatment from the very beginning of symptoms, and not wait until the disease has a significant negative impact on your quality of life.

    In Neurological Department of TAMC, we use the entire arsenal of modern methods for treating acute and chronic diseases of nervous system. As a rule, therapeutic course consists of drug correction, physiotherapy, psychotherapy, surgical intervention if necessary, rehabilitation after received treatment (classes with a speech therapist, physical therapy, physical therapy, social adaptation).

    In recent years, TAMS neurologists have achieved significant success in treating such a severe neurological problem as Alzheimer’s disease. Clinical studies are currently underway to study the effectiveness of new drugs or procedures to improve the condition in such people.

    The arsenal of modern and innovative treatments for Alzheimer’s disease is amazing, and all our patients have access to it:

    • unique computer program Savion;
    • electromagnetic therapy using the NeuroAD device;
    • deep electromagnetic stimulation of brain;
    • nasal spray for vaccination against Alzheimer’s disease;
    • latest generation drugs Ladostigil and Davunetide;
    • treatment of Alzheimer’s disease with stem cells.

    Significant advances have also been made in treatment of epilepsy. Specialists are succesful at treating forms of diseases that are resistant to standard drug treatment and have been trying unsuccessfully to overcome for years. Treatment complex selected individually, is aimed at reducing the frequency and duration of convulsive attacks, their prevention, as well as eliminating or preventing changes in brain and mental health under the influence of frequent seizures.

    Important!

    All our patients can become participants in these experimental studies, if wanted, completely free of charge. Often this is the patient’s only chance to continue an active and healthy life even after a terrible diagnosis has been made.

    In approximately 70% of cases of epilepsy refractory forms, TAMC epileptologists are able to select effective conservative treatment. The remaining 30% still require surgical neurosurgical interventions. Choice of one or another method of epilepsy surgical treatment is selected in each case personally by a whole team of professionals.

    Among modern methods of treating epilepsy, the following should be noted:

    • hemispherectomy;
    • microsurgical callosotomy;
    • multiple subpial transsection for epilepsy;
    • deep stimulation of vagus nerve;
    • implantation of N.vagus stimulator;
    • neurostimulator for epilepsy treatment (RNS System);
    • partial lobectomy;
    • cortical resection.

    To date, significant progress has been made in treatment of such a serious disabling neurological disease as multiple sclerosis. The disease mainly affects young people, progresses rapidly, leading to permanent loss of ability to work, disability and premature death. Currently, there are several modern medications that allow us to stop the progression of multiple sclerosis and lead an active lifestyle, despite the terrible diagnosis. Good results have been shown by such innovative techniques as lysosomes application with myelin and immunotherapy (T-cell vaccine, B-interferons, monoclonal antibodies, immunosuppressants and cytostatics).

    Also in recent months, TAMC neurologists have begun using a new biologic medicine to treat amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). In 2023, the drug tofersen (Kalsodi) was approved for use in ALS patients with a mutation in the SOD1 gene. The drug is injected into spinal canal cavity. Studies show that this drug can stop ALS progression in this group of patients.

    The neurological department of Tel Aviv Medical Center operates a modern rehabilitation department. Here, patients can receive help and restore lost functions after strokes, injuries, surgeries on brain and spinal cord, etc. The effectiveness of classes is very high, since specialists develop an individual training program for each person, and classes themselves are held using innovative equipment, for example, restoration of walking skills using virtual reality devices.

    Unfortunately, medicine does not yet know how to treat some neurological diseases, but scientists around the world are actively working in this direction. And as soon as such a drug or procedure becomes available, our patients will be among the first to have access to this treatment, along with all other new products and technologies in the clinic of nervous diseases.
