Orthopedics in Israel
Orthopedics is a medical field that deals with the study, diagnostics and treatment of diseases, injuries and congenital development defects in structures of musculoskeletal system (bones, joints, ligaments, muscles). Every year, Orthopedic Department of Tel Aviv Medical Center performs more than 2,000 surgical interventions, including many innovative and even experimental procedures. Orthopedic Department of our clinic is also known abroad. Patients from all over the world come to us every day to receive the necessary diagnostic and treatment program.
Spine treatment in Israel is the best choice, as they perform innovative surgical procedures and diagnostic tests, for example:
- surgical intervention on spine using neuromonitoring, which avoids damage to fine structures of nervous system and prevents complications after surgery;
- spine surgery using the SpineAssist robotic surgical unit;
- active use of TOPS implants in spine surgery.
Our patients also have the opportunity to receive joint replacements through small incisions in skin, which significantly reduces the rehabilitation period and the number of postoperative complications. In most cases, all surgeons practice minimally invasive surgeries using arthroscopy. Open surgery is used only in extreme cases.
Our medical center is proud of its orthopedic doctors, who are rightfully considered one of the best specialists in the field of traumatology and orthopedics in the world. The department has a whole multidisciplinary team: orthopedists work closely with specialists in the field of oncology, neurology, pediatrics, geriatrics, sports medicine, physical rehabilitation, etc. Thanks to their coordinated work, doctors manage to achieve success even in the most difficult cases. This comprehensive approach to the problem is completely patient-oriented and represents a modern model for providing highly specialized medical care.
Departments
The department employs several world-famous orthopedic doctors. Each of them has its own area of responsibility and deals with a specific orthopedic problem. The main areas Orthopedics Department practice:
- Department of Traumatology and Polytrauma – deals with the diagnosis and treatment of all types of injuries of the musculoskeletal system and soft tissues.
- Spine surgery – doctors who work in this area specialize in all types of surgical interventions on spine (intervertebral hernias removal, surgeries for spinal deformities).
- Hand surgery – all types of surgeries that are used for injuries or diseases of hands.
- Oncology orthopedics – diagnosis and treatment of benign and malignant neoplasms of musculoskeletal system and soft tissues.
- Department of Foot and Ankle Surgery – treats injuries, diseases and developmental defects of foot and ankle joints.
- Joint endoprosthetics department – specialists in this area are engaged in endoprosthetics of hip, knee, ankle, elbow and shoulder joints.
Sports medicine – orthopedic doctors in this area perform a wide range of manipulations and surgeries related to injuries in various sports.
What diseases does Orthopedics Department treat?
Diagnostic methods in orthopedics
Orthopedic Department of Tel Aviv Medical Center is equipped with the most modern diagnostic equipment, so diagnostic program is quick and comfortable for patient. Depending on clinical situation, the following examinations or a combination of them may be prescribed:
- Interview, examination of patient, study of medical history and life history.
- Objective examination of patient’s musculoskeletal system, determination of functional abilities – motion range measurement in joints, measurement of length and volume of limbs, determination of muscle strength, etc.
- Modern medical imaging techniques – digital radiography, CT (computed tomography), MRI (magnetic resonance imaging), MSCT (multispiral computed tomography), PET-CT (in the case of malignant neoplasms to determine the stage of the process and the presence of distant metastases).
- Ultrasound diagnostics with and without color Doppler (ultrasound of joints, spine, soft tissues).
- Densitometry is a method for studying bone density and diagnosing osteoporosis (ultrasound and X-ray densitometry).
- A set of necessary blood, urine and intra-articular fluid tests.
- Diagnostic arthroscopy – examination of joint from the inside using a modern endoscopic device – an arthroscope. If necessary, diagnostic arthroscopy can proceed directly to therapeutic manipulation.
- Biopsy of bone, cartilage and soft tissue formations followed by histological examination in the best pathohistological laboratories in Israel.
The new EOS X-ray unit is capable of scanning the entire body in just 25 seconds, while the radiation dose is several times less than on previous generation X-ray devices. This is especially important when examining children. This diagnostic device is actively used by TAMC specialists planning surgical interventions on spine in cases of severe scoliosis, various deformities of lower extremities, and in preparation for knee and hip joint replacement.
Important!
The majority of our patients, after treatment and rehabilitation in Orthopedic Department of TAMC, completely restore the function of affected arm or leg, spine, and subsequently fully recover after suffering an illness or injury.
Modern treatment methods in orthopedics
Surgical interventions in the field of orthopedics have reached a particularly high degree of development. The main principle of such manipulations is affected limb preservation and minimal invasiveness. If amputation is unavoidable, patient immediately consults with plastic surgeons and specialists in manufacture of external or internal prostheses. After the main stage of treatment, reconstructive treatment begins immediately.
Joint endoprosthesis replacement is performed using an open approach, since this is a large-scale surgical intervention and it is impossible to perform it arthroscopically. But our specialists use improved technology and surgical access – instead of a 20 cm long incision, we manage to get by with accesses of only 7-8 cm. Also, orthopedists at TAMC clinic practice simultaneous replacement of 2 knee joints, which allows the patient to avoid repeated surgical intervention and all issues, including financial ones associated with this. To replace damaged joints, our specialists use only original intra-articular prostheses made from high-quality biocompatible materials from well-known manufacturers with a guarantee of up to 20 years for their product. Thanks to this approach, there are practically no repeat surgeries due to failure of endoprosthesis.
Also, after radical surgeries with the removal of bone and soft tissue tumors, patients undergo reconstructive plastic surgery to restore the tissue defect that formed after the initial stage of surgical treatment. An example of such surgeries is prosthetics of ribs and sternum, individual vertebrae, pelvic bones, etc. Bone grafts are produced according to individual needs of each person using the most modern technologies – printing on medical 3D printers. Diagnostic and therapeutic arthroscopy is a minimally invasive technique for diagnosing joint pathologies and their surgical treatment. Using a small puncture, a camera and manipulative instruments are inserted into the joint. Surgeon carefully examines articular cavity and joint structures from inside, if necessary, performs a biopsy, collects intra-articular fluid, and carries out therapeutic procedures, for example, eliminating osteophytes, restoring the integrity of menisci or ligaments. The procedure does not require long-term hospitalization and can even be performed on an outpatient basis.
Modern methods of intervertebral hernias removin – such surgeries are carried out daily in Orthopedics Department. They perform both open surgeries, for example, spinal fusion, intervertebral disc replacement, and endoscopic low-traumatic ones, for example, laser vaporization of a damaged disc, nucleotomy.
When performing spinal surgeries, the most modern devices for monitoring the state of spinal cord and its functions are used, which is necessary to prevent organ damage during such an intervention. A new intraoperative navigation system and computed tomography scanner (O-Arm) are also available to patients.
This is only a small part of modern and innovative procedures performed by orthopedic specialists at TAMC.
