The operation of prosthetics of the aortic valve involves the removal of a failed valve and replacing it with an artificial one. The operation is performed under cardiopulmonary bypass, i.e. on a stopped heart when a special apparatus takes over the function of blood supply to organs and tissues. During the operation, the patient is in anaesthesia and does not feel pain.

Traditionally, the operation is performed through a midline incision in the sternum 20 cm long. In order to reach the heart, it is necessary to dissect the skin, soft tissues, a bone located in the middle of the chest, called the sternum, and a special heart membrane – the pericardium. The next step is to connect the heart-lung machine by connecting the aorta and cardiac veins with it in series, and then temporarily stop the heart. Further, the surgeon dissects the aorta in the transverse direction to see the aortic valve. If the valve is badly damaged, it is removed and a new, artificial heart valve is sewn in its place.
