    Appendix removal

    Appendix removal

    The appendix is a vermiform appendix of the cecum, inflammation of which leads to such a common disease as acute appendicitis. This one of the most common diseases and takes first place among severe surgical disorders of the abdominal organs. In acute appendicitis, surgery is most often the only way out.

    Basically, there are such signs of appendicitis:

    • Dull pain near the navel or upper abdomen, over time, the pain gradually falls below and becomes acute;
    • decreased appetite;
    • Edema of the abdominal cavity;
    • Nausea, vomiting;
    • Increased body temperature.

    Treatment

    Until recently, all appendix removal operations were open. In other words, the surgeon made an incision in the abdominal cavity up to 15 centimeters through which the affected organ removed. However, modern treatment methods allow the use of laparoscopic surgery. Laparoscopic appendectomy is a minimally invasive operation. During this operation, the patient undergoes three to four small incisions (punctures). Surgical instruments and an endoscope inserted through them. During the procedure, the process neatly separated from the inflamed tissues, bandaged, and cut off at the very base. With the help of special tools, through a small incision in the abdominal cavity, the appendix is completely removed. In uncomplicated forms of the disease, such an operation lasts an average of 35 minutes.

    The benefits of laparoscopic appendectomy

    • Less trauma for the patient;
    • Recovery times halved;
    • Significantly less likelihood of postoperative complications;
    • No pain;
    • The excellent cosmetic effect, since there are no scars and postoperative scars.

    Laparoscopic appendectomy for complicated forms

    In some cases, if the disease has a complicated form, the procedure for the operation may be different. This primarily because appendicitis can be complicated by peritonitis. Because of this, the tissues around the process become inflamed, and fluid accumulates in the abdominal cavity, which must be removed. For this, drainages installed. Many surgeons who have little or no experience with laparoscopic surgery prefer to perform open surgery if there are complications.

    However, it should be said that highly qualified doctors with many years of experience in almost any situation can perform laparoscopic removal of the appendix. These are the doctors who work in the modern Israeli clinic Tel Aviv Medical Clinic.
