    Primary Brain Tumors: overview

    Brain cancer is difficult to diagnose in the early stages, which determines the high mortality rate from this type of oncology. Symptoms, in this case, are similar to the signs of many neurological diseases that do not indicate mortal danger. Common signs of neurology and oncological pathologies are nausea, headache, dry mouth, impaired reflexes. An alarming factor is the sudden deterioration of certain functions (loss of vision and hearing, loss of sensation in the limbs or in the face, difficulty speaking, memory lapses).

    At the place of occurrence, primary tumours are distinguished (formed in brain tissues) and secondary – metastatic. Neoplasms are also classified according to histological characteristics, localization areas (intracerebral and extracerebral). Intracerebral tumours develop from glia of the brain (gliomas) less often ─ from connective tissue (sarcoma, angioretikulema). Gliomas, which account for the majority of brain tumour diseases, retain the ability to grow and recover after their removal.

    Types of primary tumours

    The following types of brain tumors are distinguished:

    • glioma;
    • astrocytoma;
    • ependymoma;
    • oligodendroglioma;
    • medulloblastoma;
    • meningioma;
    • schwannoma;
    • craniopharyngea.

    Of the malignant tumours, glioblastoma (a tumour from neuroglia, a complex of auxiliary cells of the nervous system that surround neurons and perform important functions in the development and maintenance of the structure of the central nervous system) and metastatic tumours are most common.
