Rectal Cancer Surgery
If cancer is found, an operation is performed, the volume and location of which depends on the characteristics of the tumour. Often, chemotherapy and radiation therapy will be given before and after surgery. In operations for cancer of the rectum and colon, the principle of functional-preserving radical surgery is used, which implies the complete removal of the visible tumour while preserving urinary and sexual functions. For this, the developed methods of preserving the autonomic innervation of the pelvic organs are used, the formation of colonic reservoirs is carried out, various models of stapling devices are widely used. Along with classical operations, laparoscopic technologies are used. Thus, in 85% of cases, it is possible to completely save the patient from the disease.
Preparation for surgery
Before surgery, the patient must undergo a comprehensive examination of the body to detect the stage and size of the tumour, the presence of an allergic reaction in the patient, and the development of the pathology. Our department at TAMC is equipped with sensitive modern equipment. Thus, the doctor can detect cancer cells at an early stage. It should be noted that the doctors in our clinic have vast practical experience and knowledge. The clinic’s surgeons perform operations using the laparoscopic method. Therefore, the recovery period is much shorter. All procedures are performed under anaesthesia. The patient must have a card with the data of the previous examination with him.
Surgery
Surgery to remove a tumour from the rectum can be done in different ways, depending on the location and size of the tumour. Surgical options vary both in volume and in the degree to which the colon, rectum, and anus remain functional. The simplest procedure is called polypectomy and is done when small superficial tumours and polyps are found that are quite close to the anus. They can be removed using minimally invasive procedures. Such operations are done through the anus, often using laparoscopy, without an incision in the abdomen or skin.
Rehabilitation
Thanks to the use of low-traumatic endovideosurgical methods with their high clarity and detailing of the smallest structures, it is possible to perform gentle nerve-preserving operations. Thanks to which, patients not only do not disturb the urinary function but also retain the ability to obtain sexual satisfaction. The doctor will give all the necessary recommendations that must be followed at home.
