    Rectal Cancer Surgery: overview

    Rectal Cancer Surgery: overview

Colon cancer is one of the most common types of cancer among men (second after prostate cancer) and among women (second after breast cancer). Rectum cancer (rectum) accounts for about 30% of colon cancers and is the ninth most common cancer in both men and women. Experts believe that ageing is the main risk factor for the development of the disease. Also, the disease is more common in patients with inflammatory bowel disease, hereditary polyposis, and in patients with family members who have colon cancer.

The most effective method of getting rid of the disease is surgical intervention. The surgeons of the Israeli clinic TAMC have all the necessary knowledge and experience to detect and treat oncology. Our department is equipped with modern equipment that allows us to use unique methods of therapy. It should be noted that the personnel are trained annually at foreign research centres.

    Preparation for surgery

Before surgery, the patient must undergo a comprehensive examination of the body to assess the development of the disease, detect an allergic reaction, stage and size of the tumour. All diagnostics are carried out on modern equipment. The patient also needs to have a card with the data of the previous study. If necessary, the specialist will advise on the operation.

    Surgery

The specialists of our clinic mainly use the laparoscopic method of surgery, which is safe and effective for the patient. To remove a malignant tumour, doctors use the following types of surgery:

    • Polyectomy – the introduction of instruments into the anus and removal of a superficial tumour without surgical incisions.
    • Transanal endoscopic microsurgery is the removal of tumours in the early stages, which are located quite deep in the rectum and are inaccessible for small transanal resection.
    • Procectomy is the removal of stage II and III tumours from the middle and lower parts of the rectum, followed by a coloanal anastomosis (that is, connecting the anus to the colon).
    • Pelvic exenteration – removal of the pelvic organs: rectum, bladder, prostate in men, a uterus with appendages in women. It is carried out in case of damage to organs adjacent to the rectum by a malignant process.

After the operation, the patient is for some time in a hospital under the close supervision of specialists. The doctor will develop treatments and a diet to be followed at home. After a while, the patient needs to come for a second examination.
