    Total Pancreatectomy

    Total Pancreatectomy

The pancreas is a small pear-shaped organ located in the depths of the abdomen, under the stomach and behind the duodenum. It is customary to divide it into three parts: the head (adjacent to the duodenum), the body and tail (located next to the spleen, in the left side of the abdomen). The pancreas secretes a number of important biological substances, including the hormones insulin and glucagon, as well as some enzymes, such as amylase and lipase, which are involved in the breakdown of dietary fats.

Unfortunately, most people do not immediately notice the presence of the disease, since at the initial stage it does not manifest itself in any way. As a rule, pathology can be detected by chance, during the passage of the diagnosis on another issue. Since most cases of pancreatic cancer are detected at a late stage, at which it is no longer possible to perform surgery, only 10 per cent of such cases are considered operable. However, it is important to remember that resection is the only currently known means of combating the disease.

This method of surgical treatment of the pancreas is radical because the entire organ is removed. After surgery, the patient may experience very serious complications, especially with regard to a severe violation of carbohydrate metabolism. Patients have a very long time to struggle with the regulation of this process. The same threat to life is a decrease in sugar. That is why a complete pancreatectomy is used in extreme cases when the pancreas needs to be removed either due to a suture leak or due to progressive cancer.

    Rehabilitation

At the end of the operation, the patient is transferred to the postoperative ward for two hours so that he can gradually move away from anaesthesia. Then he enters the intensive care unit, where he is under constant medical supervision for about a day. After that, he is placed in the surgery department, where the patient will be helped to sit in bed or in an armchair. To the extent possible, the patient is advised to move and walk. Such operations usually require hospitalization lasting 1-2 weeks.
