    What Is IORT?

Radiation therapy is the directed use of radiation to treat neoplasms and several non-neoplastic diseases. This radiation is created using special devices or occurs as a result of the decay of radioactive substances. During radiation, the death of sick cells occurs, which stops the development of the disease. If not treated, diseased cells can grow continuously, destroying healthy cells and spreading throughout the body. Radiation is used to treat many types of tumour, and for many patients, it is the only treatment they need. The success of radiation therapy should be considered a cure for the disease. Also, radiation therapy can bring a decrease in pains, symptoms of compression of healthy organs, stop bleeding.

As with most treatments, there is some risk for patients receiving radiation treatment. Radiation, killing sick cells, can also damage the normal tissues adjacent to them, which leads to the development of side effects. However, the risk of negative effects is much less than the consequences of an incurable disease.

    What Is IORT?

Tel Aviv Medical Clinic is one of the few clinics using the innovative intraoperative radiotherapy (IORT) technique. The essence of the technique is reduced to bringing high-dose ionizing radiation in the process of surgical treatment precisely to the place where the tumour was located, as well as to the risk zones for the development of relapse. The advantage of IORT is the ability to bring the necessary dose of radiation to the tumour with maximum accuracy, while adjacent organs and tissues do not enter the radiation field, therefore, the possibility of developing radiation reactions is reduced.

The goal of IORT is to minimize the risk of relapse by killing tumour cells that can be left at the edges of the operating wound. Although the IORT system is easily moved and installed in the operating system, this technique is difficult to carry out. For its implementation, coherence of actions of specialists is required: surgeon, anesthesiologist, radiologist, physicist, dosimetrist, nurses. Treatment is done with a probe that is inserted directly into the operating field.
