What Is SIRT?
SIRT is selective internal radiation therapy, is the most modern method of treating primary and secondary cancers of the liver. This procedure is highly effective and has a targeted effect that minimizes the negative effect on healthy tissues. Doctors of the Israeli clinic Tel Aviv Medical Clinic are rightly considered one of the best specialists in the world in the field of selective internal therapy.
Our clinic employs professionals in their field who have the necessary skills. We use the latest equipment and unique therapy methods. The wards of our department are equipped with everything necessary for the speedy recovery of patients. Our employees annually improve their qualifications in leading centres. We have set tariffs at the state level. Thus, you get a wide range of services at an affordable price.
Features of the procedure
The principle of the SIRT method is the introduction of radioactive substance in the form of spheres (balls) into blood vessels that feed the tumour. A radioactive substance with a blood current penetrates the smallest vessels of the capillary type and is located near cancer cells. Beta radiation spreads deep into tissues at a distance of 4 mm. This is enough to destroy or stop the development of malignant cells, while healthy liver tissue and other organs do not receive pronounced negative effects.
The “active” substance SIRT – yttrium-90, emits beta rays, which detrimentally affect tumour cells. They stay in the body for 10 days. The greatest activity is observed in the first two days of therapy. Subsequently, microspheres remain in the body but do not cause harm.
Preparing for the procedure
Before the procedure, the patient needs to conduct several laboratory studies: a general blood test, a coagulogram, biochemical screening (evaluate liver and kidney function). On the recommendation of the doctor, analyses for oncomarkers can also be performed, and instrumental studies such as CT scans, MRI scans and PET CT scans.
An important point is the conduct of mapping angiography, which precedes therapeutic manipulation. Angiography is performed by a doctor interventional surgeon or vascular surgeon, in a specialized department. During the diagnosis, the doctor assesses the blood supply of neighbouring organs and, if necessary, blocks blood flow in certain vessels.
