    Wilms' Tumor Treatment: overview

Pediatric at Tel Aviv Medical Clinic applies advanced methods of treating Wilms tumour in children. Even though this disease is rare, our specialists have extensive experience in its treatment. To achieve optimal results, we will develop an individual treatment program for your child, which does not cause long-term health disorders. The treatment program takes into account the age and general health of the child, as well as the scale of the disease, genetic characteristics, location, type and stage of the tumour.

If after an external examination of the child and in the history of the disease the pediatric has a suspicion of a Wilms tumour, the doctor issues a referral to a clinic with a specialization in this form of oncology (children’s cancer hospital). If a Wilms tumor is suspected, various tests and studies must be carried out, firstly, to confirm the diagnosis. Secondly, to find out the specific form of nephroblastoma and find out how much the disease has already spread throughout the body. Having received answers to these questions, you can begin to plan optimal treatment tactics and give прогноз‎.

    Treatment of the disease

Once the final diagnosis is made, doctors draw up a treatment plan. The specialists who lead the patient make up an individual treatment program that takes into account certain points. They are called risk factors, and they affect the прогноз‎ of the disease.

Treatment of children with Wilms tumor combined. This means that it consists mainly of surgery and chemotherapy. Most often, children begin to be treated with a course of chemotherapy to reduce the size of the tumor. Then the tumor becomes more operable. In some children, treatment immediately begins with surgery. The purpose of the surgical operation is to remove the tumor and possible metastases‎. As a rule, chemotherapy continues after surgery. Depending on the stage of the tumor after surgery and/or depending on whether there are still metastases, they can additionally prescribe radiation‎ of the tumor region.

The choice of treatment tactics in each case depends on the results of the histological analysis and the stage of tumor spread after surgery. The later the disease stage and the more malignant the tumor, the more intense and more complex the treatment should be. The goal of treatment is not just to cure a sick child, but at the same time to minimize the risks of complications after treatment, as well as the risks of distant consequences and side effects.
