    Blood test information

    Galactomannan Aspergilus Ag Blood Test

Diagnoses invasive fungal infection — invasive aspergillosis (Invasive Aspergillosis).

Result: Usually 1-3 days, sometimes up to a week. Code: L0824
    1,974

    Description of the blood test:

The Galactomannan test is a specific laboratory study used to detect a component of the cell wall of Aspergillus fungi. This antigen is released into the blood during the active growth of the fungus, making the test a critical “early warning” signal for invasive aspergillosis—a severe infection that primarily affects the lungs. This method is highly valued in clinical practice because it can detect the infection earlier than traditional X-rays or cultures, allowing for rapid intervention in patients with weakened immunity.

    What does the analysis represent?

    • Purpose: Detection of the galactomannan antigen in blood serum.
    • Primary application: Early diagnosis of invasive fungal infections and monitoring the response to antifungal therapy.
    • Performance: Enzyme immunoassay (ELISA) of a venous blood sample.

    Recommendations for the test (General)

    • Time: Recommended in the morning.
    • Fasting: 8 hours of fasting is preferred.
    • Rest: Stay in a calm state for 20 minutes before the blood draw.
    • Important: This test is often performed repeatedly (serial testing) to monitor the dynamics of the infection in high-risk patients.

    What can affect the results?

    • False-positive results: Certain antibiotics (like piperacillin-tazobactam) or specific dietary factors (cereals, pasta) can sometimes interfere with the test.
    • False-negative results: May occur if the fungal load is very low or if the patient is already receiving effective antifungal treatment.

    When to take the test?

    • Recommendations: For patients with prolonged fever not responding to antibiotics, persistent cough, or chest pain, especially those with reduced immune function.
    • Preparation: Inform your doctor about any current antibiotic treatments.

    How to interpret the results?

Interpretation of the Galactomannan test is the exclusive responsibility of a pulmonologist or an infectious disease specialist. The test result is a specialized clinical indicator, not a diagnosis. The physician correlates the antigen levels with the patient’s symptoms and radiological findings (CT scans). Only a professional can determine if a positive result indicates an active invasive process requiring immediate antifungal therapy.

    Possible further investigations

    • High-Resolution CT (HRCT) of the chest: To look for specific fungal lung patterns.
    • Bronchoscopy: To obtain samples directly from the respiratory tract.
    • Consultation with a Pulmonologist: To assess respiratory function and coordinate treatment.

When does the next step make sense?

A positive result requires immediate medical attention and further diagnostic confirmation. Early detection through Galactomannan testing is the most effective way to start treatment before the infection spreads, significantly improving the chances of a full recovery.
