Vitamin B12 and Folate -Pregnancy Panel

Monitors B12 and folate levels to prevent anemia and support fetal neural development.

      Result: 2-4 days Code: 520
      453.90

This panel is designed to assess blood levels of vitamin B12 and folate during pregnancy.
Both nutrients are essential for red blood cell production, normal cell division, and proper development of the fetal nervous system.
Deficiency in either component may affect maternal health and fetal development, particularly during early pregnancy.

      What does the panel include?

      The panel includes:

      • Vitamin B12 – essential for red blood cell formation and neurological function
      • Folate (Folic Acid) – required for DNA synthesis and normal neural tube development

Combined measurement helps identify nutritional deficiencies and conditions associated with megaloblastic anemia.

Who is this panel suitable for?

      • Women in early pregnancy
      • Women planning pregnancy
      • Pregnant women with anemia
      • Persistent fatigue during pregnancy
      • Limited intake of animal-based foods
      • Monitoring response to vitamin supplementation

The panel is particularly relevant during the first trimester but may be performed at later stages as well.

What is the advantage of a panel over a single test?

Testing only one vitamin does not allow full differentiation of nutritional anemia.
Measuring both vitamin B12 and folate helps distinguish isolated deficiency from combined deficiency.

      This approach supports:

      • Early detection of deficiency
      • Prevention of megaloblastic anemia
      • Appropriate nutritional monitoring during pregnancy

      How is the test performed?

      • A venous blood sample is collected
      • Fasting is generally not required unless additional tests are ordered
      • Patients should inform their physician about vitamin supplementation
      • No special preparation is otherwise necessary

      How are the results interpreted?

      • Low levels of vitamin B12 or folate may indicate nutritional deficiency or impaired absorption.
      • Borderline values may require additional laboratory evaluation.

Results are interpreted in conjunction with complete blood count findings and the overall clinical context.

⚠️ Interpretation of results requires medical consultation.
Laboratory findings should not be interpreted without full clinical evaluation.

      Possible complementary investigations

      • Complete Blood Count (CBC)
      • Homocysteine
      • Methylmalonic Acid (MMA)
      • Ferritin
      • Thyroid function tests when indicated

      Further medical evaluation

If deficiency is confirmed, supplementation dosage is determined according to gestational stage and severity.

In cases of significant anemia, additional hematologic evaluation may be required.
