Pediatric Brain Tumor Treatment: overview
Highly qualified doctors and the modern technology base Tel Aviv Medical Clinic are the keys to the successful treatment of brain tumors in children. Brain tumors, benign and malignant, are among the most common in children and account for about 20-25% of all cancers. A fourth of them is manifested before the child reaches the age of 4.
Specialists of the oncological-haematological department of the clinic, neurosurgeons and oncologists conduct diagnostic examination and treatment of all types of malignant and benign brain tumors. To minimize stress and fear of procedures, sometimes quite painful and long in time, small patients are accompanied during treatment by parents: both the child and his relatives are guaranteed a warm attitude and comfortable living conditions.
Our clinic cooperates with the most highly qualified specialists, recognized experts, known far beyond Israel. The team of doctors who treat brain cancer consists of specialists in various fields of medicine: oncologists, neurosurgeons, neurologists, radiologists and psychologists. Each of them has vast experience in treating such diseases.
Treatment of the disease
The examination always begins with an examination of the child by a specialist, pediatric neurologist or neurosurgeon, and a detailed collection of a history of the disease. After consultation with a doctor, the small patient is referred for additional diagnostic examination, using laboratory research and imaging methods.
After receiving the results of the examination, an individual treatment program is drawn up, which includes a complex of various methods of influencing the neoplasm tissues. Often, specialists use the following methods of therapy:
- Surgical removal of tumor. In cases where tumor resection is possible, predictions for a patient’s complete cure increase dramatically. The main goal of the operation is to remove the tumor as completely as possible while preserving the structures of the tissues of the brain, without violating the functional and anatomical integrity of the arteries and veins.
- Radiotherapy. If it is impossible to surgically remove the tumor, a course of radiotherapy is carried out. The younger the child, the smaller doses of radiation are used when exposed to the affected focus.
- Chemotherapy. The selection of drugs and their dosage is carried out individually, depending on the age of the child, his general physical condition, as well as the type of tumor and the stage of the disease. Chemotherapy can be prescribed, either as an independent therapy or in conjunction with radiotherapy or surgical removal of a tumor.
