    Departments

    There are many surgical specialties in medicine, and therefore there are many areas in pediatric surgery. On the basis of Pediatric Surgery Department at TAMC, several units operate simultaneously (the most common surgical diseases in children):

    • General surgery – specialists in this profile provide assistance to children with acute surgical pathologies, as well as with the most common surgical diseases of childhood (acute appendicitis, intestinal obstruction, inguinal and umbilical hernia, etc.).
    • Pediatric orthopedics – thie specialists treat diseases, tumors, injuries and birth defects of musculoskeletal system.
    • Pediatric urology – urologists help children with congenital developmental defects, injuries, various surgical diseases, tumors of kidneys and urinary tract; in boys, urological surgeons also treat pathologies of internal and external genital organs.
    • Pediatric oncology – surgical oncologists provide surgeries on children with malignant and benign neoplasms.
    • Pediatric neurosurgery – specialists in this profile engage in surgical treatment of diseases, injuries, developmental defects, tumors of central and peripheral nervous system.
    • Pediatric otorhinolaryngology (ENT) – doctors in this field perform surgeries on children with pathologies of ENT organs.
    • Pediatric plastic surgery – plastic surgeons who work with children most often perform reconstructive surgeries in case of congenital developmental defects, injuries in children, as well as after initial stage of surgical treatment of a certain disease.
    • Pediatric cardiac surgery – specialists in this medical sphere usually deal with surgical treatment of congenital malformations of heart and large vessels in children.

    There are still many pediatric surgical specialties. If a certain specialist is needed in a specific clinical situation, for example, a pediatric gynecologist, then he is necessarily involved in diagnostic and treatment process from another department of TAMC.

    What diseases does Pediatric Surgery Department treat?

    Diagnostic methods in pediatric surgery

    The main advantage of diagnostics in Israel is a comprehensive examination program in a short time. All procedures can be completed on site; Diagnostic Department uses only modern and safe expert-class diagnostic equipment.

    Diagnostic process occurs in 3 stages. At the first stage, specialist conducts an initial consultation, collects detailed complaints, life history and illness, and examines patient’s organs and systems. If patient had medical documentation with him (results of examinations, performed treatment), then doctor gets acquainted with these documents in detail. Next, specialist makes up an individual diagnostic program for each child.

    The second stage is an examination in diagnostic department. It can last 1-3 days. Patient undergoes all procedures and tests prescribed by surgeon. All invasive procedures, such as biopsy or endoscopy, are performed only under sedation (medicated sleep) so that children do not experience pain, fear or other psychological discomfort.

    At the third stage of diagnostics, patient is again consulted by a surgeon, who, taking into account results of additional examination, makes a final diagnosis and creates a program of comprehensive treatment and rehabilitation.

    The following modern diagnostic methods are used in Pediatric Surgery Department at TAMC:

    • Laboratory tests of blood, urine, cerebrospinal fluid (general clinical tests, biochemical tests, hormonal tests, tumor markers, etc.).
    • Ultrasound with color Dopplerography and without internal organs, vessels, soft tissues.
    • Methods of modern medical imaging – CT, MSCT, MRI, PET-CT, PET-MRI, scintigraphy, digital radiography, etc.
    • Endoscopic techniques for examining internal organs (gastroscopy, colonoscopy, bronchoscopy, thoracoscopy, laparoscopy, cystoscopy).
    • Video capsule endoscopy is an examination of entire gastrointestinal tract from the inside using a small camera (the size of a pill) that patient swallows.
    • Biopsy and histological examination of obtained tissue samples. After biopsy, we send all materials for revision to the best pathohistological laboratories in Israel. Thanks to such checks, we are absolutely sure of diagnosis correctness and subsequent chosen treatment tactics.

    An example of innovative molecular genetic diagnostics for malignant tumors in childhood oncology are the Foundation One and Caris Molecular Testing test systems. These tests let us to find a certain types of mutations in cancer cells, as well as presence of certain receptor molecules on the surface of these cells. These data are used to create individual immunobiological therapy drugs or to select targeted therapy drugs. In modern medicine this approach is called personalized oncology. Our patients have access to all benefits of modern treatment.

    Important!

    Every year, highly qualified TAMC surgeons save lives of thousands of children with acute surgical diseases, congenital developmental defects, cancer, and other diseases requiring surgical intervention.

    Modern treatment methods in pediatric surgery

    In Pediatric Surgery Department, both simple and very complicated surgeries are performed, sometimes even unique ones, that is, every patient will receive all the necessary help here, regardless of diagnosis.

    Our department practices an exclusive approach to treatment of inguinal hernia in a child. Due to the fact that sometimes unilateral occurrence of an inguinal hernia is accompanied by its appearance on the other side, often unnoticeable in the first stages, during surgery the surgeon must check this point on the other side. Repair of hernial protrusion is carried out laparoscopically (without large incisions of anterior abdominal wall). During laparoscopy, doctor examines inguinal canal and, on the other hand, if there is a defect, it is immediately eliminated. This allows us to avoid appearance of a hernia on the second side and repeated surgical intervention in future.

    A large part of surgeons work in pediatric department is reconstructive interventions for various congenital developmental defects in children. Often, preparation for surgery is carried out during pregnancy. Together with obstetric gynecologists, clinical geneticists, and specialists in the field of prenatal ultrasound, pediatric surgeons gather a consultation and discuss treatment tactics for a child with a developmental defect.

    Surgery is prescribed immediately after baby’s birth, this allows us to save child’s life and avoid any negative consequences on his health and development in future. The most common and complicated malformations that require a multidisciplinary team help are esophageal atresia, anal atresia, ventral hernia, spina bifida and spina bifida, and cardiovascular malformations.

    Department also performs other surgical operations:

    • Surgical treatment of inflammatory bowel diseases (intestinal resection and anastomosis).
    • Surgery for varicocele, testicular torsion in boys.
    • Laparoscopic appendectomy for acute appendicitis.
    • Laparoscopic cholecystectomy for cholelithiasis and acute cholecystitis.
    • Central venous catheter placement.
    • Installation of port systems for chemotherapy (Port-A-Cath).
    • Formation of arteriovenous fistula in children who require program hemodialysis.
    • Bronchoscopy, colonoscopy, esophagogastroduodenoscopy for children under medicated sleep conditions.

    Also, specialists from Pediatric Surgery Department perform planned and emergency tracheostomy. A tracheostomy is a special tube that is implanted into trachea when a child, for certain reasons, cannot breathe on his own. Children with a permanent tracheostomy are particularly vulnerable and require very special care. TAMC medical staff teaches all intricacies of this care to child’s parents, and doctors also teach how to respond to a particular complication in child with tracheostomy.

    TAMC also performs surgery to remove a tracheostomy under general anesthesia and artificial ventilation. Duration of surgery depends on specific clinical case and can take from half an hour to two. The essence of procedure is to surgically remove scar tissue inside trachea and strengthen its walls by installing a special balloon inside. To do this, surgeon, under the control of endoscopic optical equipment, inserts special surgical manipulators into larynx, with the help of which he carries out the entire required extent of intervention. After such intervention, child fully regains the ability to breathe independently.

    If it is necessary to perform surgical intervention on abdominal organs or pelvic organs, kidneys, surgeons use laparoscopy instead of classic open approach (laparotomy). This is a minimally invasive intervention in which there are no large incisions in abdominal wall, and all surgical instruments are inserted into abdominal cavity using small punctures. Surgeon controls situation inside using a camera, the image from which is displayed on a large screen in operating room.

    This surgery has a number of advantages over open surgery and is very preferable in children:

    • short rehabilitation period;
    • less blood loss during surgery;
    • lower risk of surgical wound infection and other postoperative complications;
    • excellent cosmetic effect (no large scars on skin of abdomen after surgery).

    Also in Pediatric Surgery Department of TAMC we use thoracoscopy technique (VATS – video-assisted thoracoscopy). It is used to perform diagnostic maneuvers, such as pleural biopsy, and therapeutic procedures on chest cavity organs without opening the chest wall.

    On the basis of TAMC Pediatric Surgery Department, very complex unique surgeries are also performed, for example, serial transverse enteroplasty (STEP). This is a surgery for short bowel syndrome, when, due to a disease or congenital pathology, the child is missing half or more of small intestine. Such cases are managed by a multidisciplinary team of pediatric surgeons.

    This is only a small part of modern surgical interventions performed by pediatric TAMC surgeons. If your child needs highly qualified surgical care, contact us, because nothing is impossible for our specialists.
