What Is SBRT?
Pathological brain conditions need a special approach when prescribing treatment. In modern medicine, there are several methods aimed at eliminating lesions, without resorting to radical surgery. Recently, an advanced method of disrupting malignant cells such as stereotactic radiation therapy (SBRT) has been used to treat brain and spinal cord tumours.
Stereotactic radiation therapy was developed specifically for irradiation of brain tumours since ionizing radiation has an extremely negative effect on healthy brain cells surrounding the tumour. To determine the place of exposure to radiation, an external coordinate system of the head and combined images of computer and magnetic resonance imaging are used. To conduct radiotherapy of the brain, a special individual mask is made to the patient, which ensures the immobility of the patient during the procedure. If necessary, the mask can be modified to provide maximum comfort during the procedure, for example, to patients suffering from claustrophobia.
The essence of the procedure
Minimally invasive, non-traumatic intervention in brain tissue is based on the use of X-rays that aim at the localization point of damaged cells without affecting healthy structures. At the same time, it is possible to achieve a high intensity of radiation, the doses of which negatively affect the tumour cells. At the initial stage of the tumour process, it is enough to conduct one session. The dose of focused radiation, the time and number of sessions are prescribed depending on the focus of the lesion, the stages of treatment, the type and histological characteristics of the tumour.
A low-traumatic procedure is carried out at the Tel Aviv Medical Clinic under anaesthesia, experienced professionals of the highest category who have undergone special training and practice. The operating room is equipped with advanced equipment in the form of a stereotactic device and the latest tomograph necessary to control radiosurgical treatment. The stereotactic frame is installed on the patient’s head, data of scanned images are analyzed, coordinates of formation and optimal trajectory of ray movement are determined.
Each patient of the department is provided with a cosy ward, attention and care of staff, a full range of quality medical services at quite affordable rates that do not exceed the rates of state hospitals. After surgery, the patient can recover in our rehabilitation centre under the control of leading specialists.
